Youth football league nears start
May 28 2007With volunteer Area Managers appointed for the four initial Thika regions, referees and coaches trained, Life Skills coordinators appointed, and teams being informed of the crackdown on overage players, the launch date of the planned youth football league approaches. This will be a major achievement for this 8 month old community organisation, and one which MYI have targeted since day one.
While the organisation has already achieved a lot in a short time frame - two standalone football tournaments attended by over 1,000 players and hundreds more spectators; training of 20 youth volunteers as HIV/AIDS community educators; initial trial league games within the four regions as a "trial" run for the upcoming league; first stage training of local referees and coaches of the planned 12-24 month training program that will get them up to national standard - the youth league has always been one of the founding goals of the group, along with comprehensive HIV/AIDS and Life Skills education across the community. The looming launch of the league not only achieves the football-specific goal, but also provides MYI with the ideal vehicle for our HIV/AIDS and Life Skills programs.
Further updates will be posted here shortly.
