Drama and Art projects planning begins

With the arrival of new volunteers brimming with ideas and enthusiasm for our planned drama and art projects, planning has begun in earnest. Both projects will be targeting those children in community who just want to "have a go", as well as providing a pathway for those young people with talent so they have the opportunity to see where that talent can take them. Youth football league nears start

With volunteer Area Managers appointed for the four initial Thika regions, referees and coaches trained, Life Skills coordinators appointed, and teams being informed of the crackdown on overage players, the launch date of the planned youth football league approaches. This will be a major achievement for this 8 month old community organisation, and one which MYI have targeted since day one. [read more]

First youth referee and coaching courses completed

The first stage of our planned two year path to becoming national accredited referees and coaches for the youth of Thika has been completed, with a total of 6 referees and 9 coaches completing relevant workshops in the two disciplines. The feedback from both groups was very positive, and they are all looking forward to the next stage of training. [read more]

Six youth volunteers pass HIV/AIDS exam

Our first batch of trained and qualified community youth HIV/AIDS educators have passed their exam! Congrats to these young, caring volunteers, and we have a few others who will be joining this group very soon. [read more]

The learning curve continues

Over 500 kids were involved in the second Michezo Youth Initiative youth football tournament, this time held over two days, December 9 and 10. There was a noticeable drop from the first tournament in the percentage of female players involved, as well as overall numbers either playing or watching this time. The second Michezo Youth Initiative tournament will be held over the weekend of December 9 and 10, 2006. It was decided by the youth volunteers that to fit in the required number of games to host a tournament for three age groups and both males and females two days was required. This will allow each game to consist of two 20-minute halves, and allow us to more effectively run the Life Skills activities for all teams before each game. [read more]

First Michezo tournament!

The first ever Michezo Youth Initiative tournament was held on Saturday, October 21 at Garissa Road Primary School, on the outskirts of Thika town. And what a day it was, with over 600 kids competing across three age groups ? under 10s, 12s and 14s - and both genders. [read more]
